About Us
Rooke School of Karate
What We Train
Here at Rooke School of Karate, we study traditional Uechi Ryu Karate and Ryukyu Kobudo Hozonkai, original martial arts-based out of Okinawa Japan. Our main focus is to train in the art of self-defense, focusing on discipline and self-confidence. Students of all ages will soon discover the benefits of self-discipline, improved physical strength and the knowledge to know they can choose a different path. In today’s society of personal wellness, there are not many programs that provide the same benefits as a well structure Martial Arts Program that also works on a student’s balance, coordination, and flexibility.
Sensei Steve Rooke
Sensei Steve Rooke began the study of Uechi Ryu Karate in October 1999. After meeting Master Manuel deSa, he was quickly impressed with how the style of Uechi Ryu focuses intently on the body, the spirit and the mind, bringing the training of all three areas together as one. With continue training through the years Sensei Steve has acquired a passion for the arts and progressed quickly through the ranks, currently holding the rank of Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) and Shihan (Master Instructor) certificates. Having gained an excellent knowledge of Uechi Ryu Karate, through regular training with his Sensei as well as extensive training with visiting master instructors and visits to workshops throughout the world, Sensei Steve is able to bring this excellence to his students. In June 2009, Sensei Steve was accepted as a member of the Uechi Ryu Karate Do Kenyukai Association of North America.
Through many years of training in Karate, Sensei Steve has also found a passion in the Art of Kobudo, traditional martial arts for weapons. Sensei Steve began his Kobudo training in 2002, then in 2013, his Sensei found a new Kobudo teacher, Kinjo Masakazu, and has continued his training with the Ryukyu Kobudo Hozonkai Association. In July 2019, Sensei Steve was tested and received Nidan (Second Degree Black Belt) while on a trip to Okinawa.
Along with extensive training in other sports programs he brings much experience in teaching children at all age levels.
Karate Alberta
We are current members of Karate Alberta. Every year each student must submit Karate Alberta Fees of $40.00 per year. Contact us at info@rookekatate.com for info on fees and deadlines. Anyone yellow belt or above must be a member. If you have not registered yet see Kim for a form. Being members of Karate Alberta helps support our style in the competitive arena and allows our students who want to compete the opportunity to do it not only provincially but also nationally.
Student Creed
Remembering that the martial arts begin and end with respect, I intend to:
- Develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or physical health.
- Develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
- Use what I learn in class constructively and defensively, to help myself and my fellow man and never to be abusive or offensive.
